Step Up and help safeguard our seabirds at sea

Much of our marine life is disappearing due to pressures created by human activity. There are international and national laws in place which aim to protect wildlife including seabirds.

The urgency to implement them and designate sites in need of protection is greater than ever. The process is underway to form a network of protected areas for marine wildlife.

Paisley Town Centre Townscape Initiative

The Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) and Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) is a regeneration programme funded by Renfrewshire Council, Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland. Come along and find out more on 29 February 2012 at 12.30pm, Paisley Museum.

RSPB Lochwinnoch Redevelopment

What are the RSPB doing? The plans are increasing the amount of important wetland habitat; creating a new channel and pools in the Aird Meadow, using spoil from the excavations to create a shallower edge to the Aird Meadow Loch, and reconnecting the Millbank Burn to the Barr Loch.

Why is it important? The work will aid the restoration of favourable conditions for the key SSSI features, and will help achieve good ecological status under the Water Framework Directive. Habitat improvements will benefit a wide range of species, including great crested grebes, otters, and rare inescts. Reconnecting the natural flow of the water will allow a delta to form, creating a more natural and sustainable wetland system. Bringing the water closer to the RSPB centre will enhance the wildlife spectacle for visitors.

Erskine Environmental Group

Currently, this group is being set up to protect Pipistrelle Bats in and around wooded areas of Erskine.

Funding has been provided by CSV Earth Action to put up 12 bat boxes. On Sunday 23rd October, a tree survey was completed and 3 sites have been identified. Future events will involve securing bat boxes to mature trees and monitoring bat movements.

Documentary available on community energy project

This week, a short documentary about how a Stirlingshire village has benefited from renewable energy and other energy saving projects can now be watched online.

Fintry was the first village in the UK to enter a joint-venture agreement with a wind farm developer. The Wind of Change15 minute documentary follows the community’s efforts as they carry out installation of micro-renewable heating systems, planting a community orchard and opening a woodland area for the local primary school.

Centenary celebrations for Paisley Scouts

The bust of the Scout celebrating the 100th anniversary of scouting was unveiled on 29th September 2011.

The memorial is located at the entrance to the Paisley Art Gallery and Museum.

Fundraising efforts by the Paisley and District Scouts has made this possible. The Trust provided landfill tax funds for the Plinth.

Special thanks is also due to the sculptor, Sandy Stoddart who has supported the project.

Support for community garden at the Cherry Centre

In the last four months, the Trust has supported environmental education at the Cherry Centre, Moorpark, Renfrew.

The Grow Your Own project focused on runner beans and sunflowers. This involved children from day care services.

New shrubs and flowering plants for containers were also purchased and planted with input from staff and volunteers.

Recycling promotion
